San Juan Chamula Church / Chamula, Mexico

Image

Located only miles from San Cristobal de las Casas, the indigenous town of Chamula feels  worlds apart. As an autonomous municipality,  Chamula is governed by Tzotzil laws and traditions. Similarly, the town’s church represents a fascinating cross-section of Catholicism and pre-Hispanic Mayan rituals, where chickens are sacrificed next to statues of the Virgin Mary. By far the most interesting and mystical church I’ve ever stepped foot in.
